Chapter 6

Serpent Prince and Seventh Sister,

That day kept the guests,

The next day kept the guests,

Kept them till the tenth day,

When the guests finally said goodbye.

Gold borne in three bundles,

Silver borne in three bundles,

Grains borne in three bundles,

They escorted father and Mother back home,

The escorted Elder Brother back home.

Escorted them over the great mountain peaks,

And came to the bank of a great river;

The river was wide with swift rapids,

The waves were high and fast,

Father and Mother couldn't cross,

Elder Brother couldn't cross,

Above the river there spanned no bridge;

Serpent Prince then built a bridge,

Father and Mother crossed over it,

Elder Brother crossed over it,

The gold, silver and grains were carried over it.

Father, Mother and Elder Brother stood on that bank,

Seventh Sister and Serpent Prince stood on this bank.

Seventh Sister couldn't bear to part with Father and Mother,

Heartbroken, she couldn't hold back her tears;

Seventh Sister couldn't bear to part with Elder Brother,

Heartbroken, she couldn't hold back her tears.

Father and Mother dearly loved Seventh Sister,

Elder Brother dearly loved Seventh Sister,

Heartbroken, they couldn't hold back their tears.

Serpent Prince, at Seventh Sister's side,

Gazed longingly at Father and Mother on the opposite bank,

Shedding tears like rainwater;

Seeing Elder Brother on the far bank,

His tears mingled with the flowing water.

Seventh Sister and Serpent Prince,

Knelt on the green river grass;

The two of them bowing to Father and Mother,

The two of them knocking their heads on the ground for Elder Brother:

"Dear Ah Ba! Dear Ah Ma!

Dear Elder Brother!

If you miss us,

Please come to visit any time!"

Father and Mother urged a thousand times:

"Father and Mother's dear daughter!

Father and Mother's dear son-in-law!

Quickly turn and go back,

You must do your work well,

You must make a good life for yourselves."

Elder Brother enjoined them ten thousand times:

"Elder Brother's dear youngest sister, ya!

Elder Brother's dear brother-in-law!

Quickly turn and go back,

You must be diligent and hardworking,

You must live together harmoniously."

Seventh Sister and Serpent Prince

Together replied:

"Dear Ah Ba! Dear Ah Ma!

Dear Elder Brother!

Wait until the next year of the Snake,

Wait until the next month of the Snake,

Wait until the next day of the Snake,

Wait until the next hour of the Snake,

At that time we'll return home to pay our respects to

Father and Mother,

We'll return home for a visit with

Elder Brother.

The mountain breezes blew through the forests,

Sparrows wheeled over head,

As the river flowed into the distance.

Father and Mother's shadows could not be seen,

Elder Brother's shadow couldn't be seen.

Seventh Sister and Serpent Prince,

From Father and Mother dutifully parted,

From Elder Brother dutifully parted.

On the road only footprints remained,

The river flowing was the only sound to be heard.

Seventh Sister's tears flowed without end,

Serpent Prince's comforting words never ceased.
